CHILDHOOD DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES
One thing all parents have in common is that eventually they will have to deal with a temper tantrum, defiance, or child that misbehaves. How we as parents handle these situations sets our children up to grow and learn and they can either learn valuable lessons on appropriate behavior or remain unchecked and learn to disregard authority and boundaries.
There is no set of discipline rules that are appropriate for every child and every situation. What works well to teach one child may not work well for others, and what works well to teach a lesson in one situation may not be appropriate for all situations. While you may have to find different ways of teaching your child discipline, here are some general guidelines to keep in mind.
Discipline should be used as a tool to teach your child. Children need rules and guidelines to learn how to respect other and act appropriately but children also need love and positive interaction to learn these lessons.
Discipline should not be used before a child is old enough to understand why they are being punished. Very young children benefit more form redirection rather than punishment.
Children should never be punished for things that are a normal part of development such as speech problems, thumb sucking, fear of the dark, and toileting accidents. Punishing children for these behaviors is not productive and does not teach children the lessons they need to overcome these behaviors.
Discipline is about more than just punishment, it is also about setting reasonable rules, boundaries, and limitations to keep your children safe and teach them how to interact with other appropriately. Both parents must be consistent in the application of discipline for it to work effectively.
It is important that children understand why certain rules exist or why they are punished for certain behaviors. You should explain to your child in language they can understand why they are being punished or why they must follow certain rules. When children know why discipline exists they will be able learn how to make better decisions with this information.
Rules are important but for very young children it is important to keep rules very simple and easy to understand. The fewer the rules there are to follow the easier time a child will have remembering them.
Children learn the most through what they see, so it is important that you model the behavior you expect from your child. Showing your child the right way to act is the best way you can teach them appropriate behavior.
